About us

Who we are

We are an organization of change-makers who believe that our process of hands-on participation creates bonds that build connections and develop opportunities for young women to build strong personal foundations.

Mujer, Inc. was founded in 1981 as a non-profit organization by a group of professional Latina women in Phoenix, Arizona.

Our purpose was to serve as a catalyst for Latinas to come together to network and support one another in navigating the business and social communities. As an extension of our commitment to our mission statement, the development of a community outreach program became a focus of Mujer, Inc. and the Project Mana Program was created. “Mana” is derived from the Spanish word “hermana” meaning sister. The concepts of the Project Mana Program were unique and culturally based to serve and address social issues adversely impacting young Latina students.

From the beginning, the Project Mana Leadership Program encouraged self-esteem, cultural pride, development of their individual voices and the importance of staying in school and going on to higher learning institutions. The key elements of the program is to have members of Mujer, Inc. deliver these concepts and core values through the process of mentoring, modeling and mirroring these concepts.
